Alex Iwobi given marching orders

Alex Iwobi was given his marching orders just five minutes after coming on as a sub in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations defeat by Tunisia.

The Everton star saw red after a shocking tackle left Tunisian goalscorer Youssef Msakni writhing in pain on the deck.

Iwobi had been introduced on the hour mark as the Super Eagles went in search of an equaliser after Msakni’s opener just after half-time.

And the 25-year-old appeared to take a heavy touch after receiving a pass from Leicester man Wilfred Ndidi.

Iwobi then stepped across his opponent to shield the ball, but made contact with Msakni’s shin in the process.

It was no doubt a nasty challenge but at first glance there appeared little malice and referee Maguette N’Diaye initially dished out a yellow.

But VAR replays suggested the incident may have been worthy of a dismissal - and N’Diaye agreed after going to the monitor.

Iwobi was open-mouthed as the ref produced a red card from his pocket to leave Nigeria with 10 men.

Christian Eriksen 'close' to short-term deal in Premier League

Christian Eriksen is reportedly 'close' to finalising a short-term deal with Premier League new boys Brentford.

Eriksen has not featured since suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, and had his contract with Inter terminated last month after being banned from playing in Serie A.

But the 29-year-old is now on the brink of a return to the Premier League, according to Sky Sports.

It's claimed Brentford have agreed terms with the playmaker over a six-month deal, with the option of a further year.

But The Athletic report a deal hinges on whether Eriksen passes all the relevant medical checks that are necessary after his shock cardiac arrest.

A sports cardiologist needs to clear him to play, as do the FA and the Premier League.

The Bees are next in action on February 5 at Everton in the FA Cup, although Eriksen is unlikely to feature in that clash, regardless of whether he receives medically approval in time.

A work permit must be granted in order for him to play, but as Eriksen is currently a free agent there is no rush against the clock to get anything over the line.

Both Leicester and Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Eriksen, but it's the Bees who are now close to getting a deal over the line.

Leicester fan arrested for spitting

A fan has been arrested on suspicion of assault for allegedly spitting at a steward in last night’s Premier League clash between Leicester and Tottenham.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “A 22-year-old man from Bedfordshire has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

“He will remain in police custody.

“It's alleged that he spat at a steward at the game.”

A Leicester fan responded to the news on Twitter by claiming they witnessed visiting fans 'trampling' on a steward 'laying on the floor'.

The reply read: “Horrible scenes from away fans trampling some poor steward laying on the floor, shame on them, big fines for the club I hope.”
