Weekend News Recap

Friday night’s Premier League clash between Watford and Norwich was plunged into chaos when the floodlights failed.

The floodlights in each corner of Vicarage Road began to dim and referee Mike Dean deemed it was unsafe to continue – even though visibility was not interrupted.

The delay lasted ten minutes before Dean consulted the two managers and captains and asked if they were happy to continue, which they were.

The game also produced one of the goals of the season when Norwich ace Josh Sargent flicked the ball with his heel goalwards and magically hit the net - before doubling the Canaries’ lead after the floodlight chaos.

Meanwhile, Chelsea pair Ben Chilwell and Reece James shared a photo together of their rehabilitation.

The Blues full-backs were all smiles in the gym as they worked on getting back to full fitness.

The English duo’s Blues team-mate Antonio Rudiger could end up staying at Stamford Bridge - if the club manage to stump up £220,000-a-week to meet the defender's demands.

However, Thomas Tuchel’s side will have to move swiftly as the German’s contract is up in the summer and Man United are hot on his heels.

United’s rivals Man City look set to beat them in the transfer race for River Plate’s Argentina international forward Julian Alvarez.

Reports in South America suggest a deal is close between City and the striker who was previously linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Man City chasing River Plate’s Argentina international forward Julian Alvarez

Man City are closing in on a deal for River Plate’s Argentina international forward Julian Alvarez.

The 21-year-old – who is rated at around £17million by his club – has previously been linked with Manchester United.

But neighbours City have moved ahead in the race for his signature.

And reports in South America suggest a deal is close.

Alvarez is likely to spend the remainder of the season with River Plate as part of the agreement.

Then City would decide whether he links up with Pep Guardiola’s squad or joins one of the other teams in the City Football Group initially.

He has enjoyed an outstanding season in Argentina – scoring 18 goals and laying on seven assists in just 21 games so far.

Sunderland have signed winger Patrick Roberts

Sunderland have signed winger Patrick Roberts from Manchester City on an initial six-month contract.

The League One Black Cats have the option of extending it at the end of the season in a deal that could be worth up to £3million.

The winger, 24, leaves the Citizens after seven years and eight loans, with his last coming at French side Troyes.

Roberts, who is available to face Portsmouth on Saturday, said: “I can’t wait to get going. I came to the game against Sheffield Wednesday a few weeks ago to get a feel for it and it was great to watch – and something that I wanted to be a part of.

"The fans want you to do well and work hard every matchday and that pressure and expectation is something I thrive off.

"I just want to do well for the people that support me and get Sunderland back to where they belong.”

Rangnick Bild bombshell

Ralf Rangnick won't be able to bring top target Amadou Haidara, according to Bild.

United won't sanction the signing until expensive squad players are sold or loaned out.

Utd are 'afraid' to rebuild their squad around Rangnick's long-term plans and style in case they appoint a permanent manager who has a different vision.

Rangnick's role also hasn't been properly defined, despite having a two-year contract and an 'advisory role' lined up.

Rangnick would like to work with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, but there's conflict over whether the Dutchman is the right fit.

Manchester City want to sign River Plate forward Julian Alvarez.

According to Juan Cortese of Argentine sports outlet TYC Sports, City want to sign the 21-year-old who already has 36 professional goals to his name.

Alvarez could be the No9 replacement for Sergio Aguero, who left for Barcelona in the summer.

He could also replace Ferran Torres who also departed for Barca.

Thomas Tuchel on Team News

Thomas Tuchel on team news: No news maybe good news as Trevoh, Ben, Reece are out. Kenedy is back. It's a huge opportunity to make his mark on this team. We can't say that Kenedy is the solution. He [Ruben Loftus-Cheek] has a lot of game time if you look at this season. He's a lot to fight for here. This will happen behind closed doors about bringing players back. We send them to go on loan for a full season."

Thomas Tuchel on Manchester City:

"They are the benchmark, they are the best team in England right now. This is something we have to admit realistically. They are very strong, consistent and perform on the highest level. They did not suffer from Covid like we did. This is the huge difference. We had some draws that were unnecessary. If you have a full squad, you create a certain atmosphere to push. Maybe, who knows [defeat ends title hopes]. The biggest difference is they dealt better with injuries and Covid. Maybe it's unlucky, whatever, but they have less injuries to key players. They are on a level of consistency, quality, producing results even when it's getting close. They are very strong, it's going to be a tough one. I strongly, strongly hope that's not the case [games called off for injuries and AFCON]. Otherwise I will be very angry. We are doing everything to make games happen. We were made to play when we thought not. I can only hope the rules are for everybody. This creates the energy, atmosphere and extra level if you want to compete. This is not an excuse, it's an explanation of where we will find ourselves. We will come up with a plan, push, help and support in the best way with genuine belief. It's a different team when everyone is available. They opened the gap, not over the last month but years. I was never shy to say this. We try to close it, we were self-confident enough to say we will try. I want to be very clear, I will be absolutely happy with the players we travel with tomorrow.

Thomas Tuchel on defeat to Man City earlier this season:

My approach was too passive. Lesson learned. They were too aggressive. We did not have a solution to escape. We have trust in what we do, in our players, in the mentality of our club that we can do it. We have a strong squad, belief in what we do. We will be there."

We need to over-perform to catch City and be top of Man City. To over-perform, you need everybody. "I don't expect nothing special tomorrow, it's a league game not a knockout. I'm expecting nothing new, just the best of City." Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Chelsea will be without Andreas Christensen against Manchester City after he tested positive for Covid-19.
